The Importance of Having Family Dinners Together

It is a well known fact that many families do not eat meals together. The schedules of everyone in the family just doesn’t make time for it. Kids have after school football, softball, playdates, and is lucky if they get a chance to grab dinner at the drive-thru window.  Parents too are often working doubled shifts. We have all become over scheduled…or have we?

Research does suggest that eating dinner together as a family unit at least 4 times a week has positive effects on a child’s development. Routine again is key! We believe that it is important to make time to eat together as it provides an opportunity for family members to spend time enjoying good food and each other’s company. Here are some other benefits:

  • Children might try new food, including veggies.
  • Healthier choice in eating
  • Portion control
  • Healthy Kids
  • Learn table manners
  • Do well in school
  • Open communication channels

It is important for the general health of the family unit to have downtime. We all seem to be falling short.
