A Guide to Helping Hands in the Kitchen

All parents want their child to develop a healthy attitude towards food and having them help you in the kitchen can help make the food experience a lot more pleasant. I always found that having my children help in the kitchen meant that they were more willing to try different foods.

Here are some age appropriate tasks for a toddlers (ages 2- 4 years)

  • Rinsing fruit and vegetables
  • Tearing lettuce leaves for a salad
  • Layering ingredients in to a sandwich
  • Wiping countertops with a paper towel
  • Peeling bananas

Here are some age appropriate tasks for a kids (ages 5- 9 years)

  • Snipping herbs and leafy vegetables
  • cutting soft fruits (bananas, strawberries
  • Juicing lemons or limes
  • Setting the dinner table
  • Stirring, whisking or sifting flour
  • Icing cakes (if you are brave!)

Here are some age appropriate tasks for a kids (ages 10-12 years)

  • Cracking eggs
  • Peeling vegetables – carrots, turnips, potatoes
  • Slicing vegetables – mushrooms, olives, zucchini
  • Grating cheese
  • Opening cans with a can opener
