A Simple Guide to Using Praise, Encouragement and Rewards
Encouragement and praise are two great ways to help boost your child’s self esteem. Once self esteem is boasted, confidence within your child grows too and they start feeling good about themselves. Sometimes rewards can be useful too, especially if you want to encourage good behavior.
Praise is when you tell your child what you like about him or his behavior. It also goes a long way towards helping your child feel good about himself. When children get praised for behaving well, they’re likely to want to keep behaving well.
Encouragement is praise for effort – for example, “You worked hard cleaning up your toys”. Praising effort can encourage your child to try hard in the future. It is important to remember that encouragement is vital for all children at all ages. Some children, especially those who are less confident, need more encouragement than others.
A reward is a consequence of good behavior. It is another way of saying “well done” after your child has done something good or behaved well. We recommend that you don’t use food or candy as rewards. Instead think about a reward chart. Rewards may be phased out once the good behavior is established.
Rewards can make your praise and encouragement more effective in encouraging good behavior. Most behavior is influenced by the consequences that follow it, so when you reward your child’s behavior, the behavior is more likely to happen again in the future.
It is often the case that bad behavior gets noticed more than good behavior. Remember to notice when your child is playing nicely by themselves or reading quietly. Pay attention to the good behavior too!
When you speak to your child, the words you use are just as important as how you say it. In fact, they make a lasting impression on your child and can greatly impact his development. With the help of child development experts we created the Encourage & Praise® method. It’s included in every one of our reward chart systems and it will help you be the patient and positive parent your child needs.
